What goes where? Optimal loading has a direct effect on fuel consumption
OSK-ShipTech A/S develops new model for determining loading arrangements on high-speed ferries

High speed = Less fuel consumption? Sounds like an oxymoron and goes against what we normally know about the relation between speed and fuel consumption. But nonetheless, it has been known in the marine industry for a while that catamaran ferries sailing at higher speeds in shallow waters actually benefit from a semi-planning mode effect resulting in lower fuel consumption.

To further minimise fuel consumption, OSK-ShipTech A/S’ Numeric team has developed a new and revolutionary approach to model the shallow water-effect of high-speed catamarans including the effects of water jets. In this approach, the flow and hydrodynamic forces from the water jets are included in the simulation to account for their effect on trim and heave.

Stig Staghøj Knudsen, Naval Architect and CFD-expert and Head of OSK Numeric, will present this new model at Star Global Conference 2016 in Prague (7-9 March) and also talk in-depth about how to determine the loading arrangement of trucks and cars on board. This will prove to be a useful tool for operators, as improvement in loading plans will result in a significant reduction in overall fuel consumption.
