KANALEN, designed for the Thyborøn-Agger route on Denmark’s north-west coast, is the country’s first new-built hybrid Ro-Ro within its segment. It is a shortcut-ferry connecting the communities on both sides of the westernmost broad of Limfjorden.
OSK-ShipTech has designed the new double-ended ferry with short loading and off-loading time with optimised access for all passenger types – cars, lorries, walking passengers, and bicycles. It has a capacity of 98 passengers and 2-man staff and is designed to operate in the choppy waters bordering the North Sea.
The diesel-electric/battery-hybrid RoRo newbuilding is a combination of modern and environmentally friendly technology and a return to what was once a shipbuilding norm, namely with a sheer on the deck. The sheer, emphasized in the paint pattern on the vessel’s sides, minimises mid-ship volume below the main deck to ensure gross tonnage below 500 t. This was a demand for 2-man staff operation. At the same time, the sheer helps complying with bow-height demands for the route and sea area class.

Specifics: Length o.a. 45.9 m, breadth 11.5 m, deadweight 280 t, 98 passengers (summer) / 60 passengers (winter).
